Once the Great Dragon told him he was more like Morgana than he thought. "I'll never be like her," he said fiercely.
But sometimes he wonders. When Arthur kills someone he feels remorse, sometimes guilt. He knows most people feel something. But it doesn't bother Merlin. He feels nothing.
Sometimes he thinks, if he had just told Morgana about his magic when she was still unsure of which way to turn, when she was losing her friend Gwen to Arthur, perhaps, if she had not felt so alone... then maybe she wouldn't have fallen for the druids, and Mordred, and Morgause. Maybe...
He remembers the one time. One moment, when the time was right. He was there, in front of her, and he knew he should tell her. And he couldn't.
He had been hiding his magic for so long, sometimes he wondered if he had forgotten how to tell the truth.
All his life he had lied to others. Maybe he'd never known how to tell the truth.
